Do animals seek out alcohol? We’re digging into the science behind animals getting drunk off fermented fruit which has been a topic that has piqued my interest for a while now. Some of you may have already seen like the New York City drunk raccoon video or heard about vervet monkeys stealing cocktails from bars, well I’m talking with a molecular biologist and anthropologist Dr. Mareike Janiak who studies how primates, bats and other mammals digest their food so we can get down to the bottom of it or the bottom of the bottle I guess you could say. Mareike also wrote an article debunking the myth that elephants are too big to get drunk off fermented fruit! You can read that and more on this episode at FloraBrewing.com/Podcast or subscribe to my Substack: BrewingAfterHours.Substack.com. And stay tuned after the interview for the review of a beer I collaborated with Conscious Ales on called Casa Flora, a farmhouse saison with cherries.
