Today we’re very happy to share a two-part interview with former Surgeon General Dr. Richard Carmona – pre- and post-pandemic.

Dr. Carmona is an American physician, nurse, police officer, and a vice admiral in the Public Health Service Commissioned Corps. He was also a medic in Vietnam, a deputy sheriff, a SWAT team member, a trauma surgeon, and public health administrator — who also happened to serve as the seventeenth Surgeon General of the United States. Today, he is the Chief Of Health Innovation at Canyon Ranch Spa in Arizona, a Board Member of the Global Wellness Institute, and a Medical Advisor to the 2020 Global Wellness Summit in Palm Beach Florida in November.

Believe it or not, Dr Carmona was a high school dropout — but he defied the odds to become the top doc in the land and accrue that impressively diverse resume. You’ll hear his unbelievable story of growing up as a “poor Hispanic kid” in New York City's Spanish Harlem, The Heights that Lin Manuel Miranda made famous, and how he found himself becoming the top doc in the land.

Dr. Carmona also shares a lot of practical advice and interesting ideas to mull over: 3 tips to keep preventable disease out of your life, what happens when individual rights and societal rights clash, and the distance between wellness, joy, and hope. And that’s all before the COVID-19 shutdown! The episode ends with an excerpt from a master class that Dr. Carmoa conducted a few weeks ago for the Global Wellness community. People from 68 countries tuned in as he was interviewed by Global Wellness Founder Susie Ellis and GWS Executive Director Nancy Davis.

You might notice that his message pre and post COVID-19 are pretty much the same — it turns out common sense and non-partisan, science-based decision making are always in style.
