Hello, this is Hall T. Martin with the Startup Funding Espresso -- your daily shot of startup funding and investing. I often see CFOs and board members give the investor pitch instead of the CEO. In an emergency this is okay, but by and large, the CEO should be giving the pitch. The investors want to size up the CEO and know who is running the business. I find the CEO stand-ins can deliver the information, but they rarely close the deal. As a CEO, you need to give the pitch and deliver the vision with a compelling narrative. You need to know your numbers well and how the business model works. In short, you need to be able to answer all the questions AND sell it. You can get help from others to build the financial model and put a good design on the pitch deck. Team members can also help with identifying investors, developing key metrics, and other support functions. But ultimately, there’s no one like the CEO to pitch investors as that is what it will take to close the investment.
