Richard Chase, notoriously remembered as the Vampire of Sacramento, was in and out of mental institutions for years, ultimately being diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia. Eventually, he was released from the American River Hospital just outside of Sacramento and, without the ability to control his thoughts or behavior, he would embark on a month-long murder spree from December 1977 to January 1978, which claimed the lives of six people as well as several animals. His moniker was due to the fact that Chase drank the blood of and cannibalized his victims because he believed that someone had stolen his pulmonary artery and that his blood had stopped flowing inside him so, in order to survive and prevent his blood from turning into powder, he needed to ingest the blood of others. Happy October, friends.
